Unexamined Lives: A Methodology of Women, Violence and War in Lebanon

In the late 1990s, I undertook a fieldwork-based research project into the effects of violent conflict on Palestinian refugee women and Shi’i Muslim women in Lebanon. My objectives were to find out whether women who lived through the violent conflict in Lebanon, and the aftermath of conflict, have been inhibited from full participation either in the conflict itself or in the ensuing processes of reconstruction and reconciliation by various forms of violence, both aimed at them directly and present in the general environment; and also, to explore how the efforts made by women themselves are making a positive contribution towards post-conflict resolution.
