Participatory Research Methods in Post-conflict Reconstruction Study Visits

Differently from those participatory assessment and evaluation training courses run by various organizations working in disaster and conflict affected areas, when it comes to teaching such techniques in a classroom environment in higher education, there tend to be two major challenges. First of all, those research method courses that incorporate PRA techniques in their timetable would need to cover them in a limited period of time and in addition to other more conventional research methods. Second, working in a classroom there would be no real opportunities of experiencing the application of such techniques, and therefore, when postgraduate students would apply any of these methods as part of their field research it would often be the first time that they would actually be implementing them.
