ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to summarise a number of the themes which regularly crop up. It offers some speculations regarding the likely directions the field of Patient Safety Culture (PSC) will take in the coming years, as well as potential areas for future exploration. Many studies which report findings based on PSC surveys focus on a limited set of participants, roles and healthcare specialists. A closer look at the characteristics of respondents reveals that, often, the largest percentage of them are nurses or healthcare assistants, with a much smaller response rate from physicians and other medical practitioners. A final area which has recently grown in importance is studies which have looked at how to improve the resilience of healthcare organisations. There are a number of areas for future work which might help to improve the scientific basis of PSC as well facilitating comparison between studies.
