ABSTRACT

This chapter explores how the media in all 27 European Union (EU) member states covered the European Parliament (EP) elections. The chapter considers frame that relate to the utilitarian nature of European integration on the one hand and, on the other hand, it looks at how the news frames the democratic nature of the EU and its institutions. The chapter considers the framing of the EU as either being beneficial or disadvantageous for its respective member states. The chapter focuses on the national television news and newspaper coverage of the elections, exploring how the media in all the 27 EU member states covered the EP elections, with a focus on the visibility of the elections, the media framing, and the evaluations of the EU with regard to its democratic functioning and legitimacy, as well as its performance in terms of benefits and disadvantages for its respective member states.
