ABSTRACT

This chapter seeks to understand the consequences of parties European Union (EU) articulation and contestation. One of the core reasons that citizens are even less involved in EU politics than in national politics is often seen in the lack of cues regarding EU integration from communicative actors, that is mass media and political parties, for whom researchers have shown that they often treat EP elections poorly. The chapter describes whether political parties can affect citizen's political involvement, attitude formation, and behavior with regard to matters of European integration by their strategic campaign communication. Within the framework of the project Between Integration and Demarcation. From an overview of available empirical studies dealing with the effects of parties EP campaigns, people expect that communicative action might foster citizen's involvement, attitude formation, as well as political participation under certain conditions.
