Prophecy: A Perspective from the Early Church and the Contemporary Experience of a Methodist Minister

It should be stated at the outset that the early Christians did not see a prophet simply as somebody who predicted the future. The definition of the New Testament Greek word ‘προφήτης / prophētēs’ in the Greek lexicon widely used by New Testament scholars (the Bauer/Danker BDAG lexicon) is, ‘A proclaimer or expounder of divine matters or concerns that could not ordinarily be known except by special revelation’. This does not explicitly mention the future. I will reflect further on that later.
