There was nothing strange about it. We knew that the great big outside world of fallen people was infinitely more populous than our community consisting of very tiny groups of awakened people, but being in the minority made it feel especially normal. There were enough of us at least to obviate all but the briefest occasional interaction with outsiders, and the invisible taint of original sin that came off on our hands whenever we encountered them could be cleansed with a pinch of the sacred salt above the cupboard next to the icing sugar.
