2012 and the Revival of the New Age Movement: The Mayan Calendar and the Cultic Milieu in Switzerland

During most of 1999, researchers working on millenarian movements received requests from journalists – and even from law-enforcement officers – asking them about Y2K and how likely it was that groups of believers in the end times would undertake something spectacular. Most scholars could only say that few of these groups in the Western world gave much significance to the year 2000 per se. Fears about the turn of the millennium as they could be observed in Switzerland (since this country will be the focus of the present article) were primarily secular beliefs about computers that would no longer work or ATMs that would refuse to issue money to customers.
