ABSTRACT

This chapter proposes one of the most important aspects of drawing in architecture: that of the architect's sketchbook. The Sketchbook iPad app may simply be a good example of current transfer technology from that of the analogue to the digital. The sketchbook has always been the best tool to communicate the architecture student's thinking through the different stages of the design process, and in a way that no other part of the development work could do. The pile of sketchbooks traditionally displayed at the end of year show acted like visual diaries: tracking the depth of investigation and development of the studio projects. In researching and curating 'The Secret Laboratory' exhibition on contemporary architects' sketchbooks. Le Corbusier said several times that he was much more interested in people than he was in architecture and, in truth, a careful reading of his sketchbooks. The skilled labour associated with these large drawings came to symbolize the professional signature of the architect.
