ABSTRACT

The opening up of Vietnam's economy has brought significant changes to Vietnam. The economy has been growing at an average rate of 6 per cent for the past 15 years. Vietnam is relatively rich in natural resources and its economy is still predominantly agricultural. Small-scale producers of fresh vegetables supply supermarkets by joining cooperatives or contracting to private companies. In milk supply, backyard' producers have replaced state farms as suppliers to processors. A particular concern for Vietnamese consumers is pesticide residues in foods such as fresh vegetables. This chapter considers that many consumers seeks hygienic' vegetables. The development of supermarkets in terms of retailing fresh vegetables is still in its infancy. The development of the dairy industry in Vietnam is an example of a successful policy formulation that has benefited small farmers in several ways. The development of the technical capabilities of small producers is important in assuring the quality of their dairy products.
