ABSTRACT

The Ugandan economy is dominated by the agricultural sector, which accounts for about 42 per cent of national GDP, 90 per cent of exports and 80 per cent of employment. The soil is generally fertile and the climate favours agricultural production. The country is able to produce all the year round and has a plentiful supply of land and relatively cheap labour. A modern food system is still emerging in Uganda and that gives the government time to help small-scale producers gear up to become preferred suppliers. A variety of fruits and vegetables are grown in Uganda, mainly on a small scale. Fruits and vegetables play an important role in nutritional balance, income generation and food security at farm level and most of them are of high value on the export market. Production of fruits and vegetables has increased over the last few years, resulting in huge marketable surpluses during the peak seasons.
