ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the issue of personal safety in male prostitution and explores if safety is an issue and concerns to men, as well as women, involved in prostitution. It explores the experiences of men in three areas of prostitution, as identified by Minichiello et al. A major concern in terms of male prostitutes' safety is their drug, substance and alcohol use. A number of men who used alcohol, drugs and substances during prostitution reported being unable to recall the clients they had been with. The perpetrators of violent acts and verbal assault were not confined to those directly linked to, or involved in, prostitution, male prostitutes also referred to such incidents being carried out by members of the general public. Verbal abuse was experienced by both men who escorted and men who were involved in street prostitution.
