ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses many aspects of science which focuses on: methodology, its application in the world, the metaphysical assumptions that it assumes, the role naturalism plays in determining what is to be studied and what is to be considered as knowledge. The Greek theologian Panayiotis Nellas sums up this perspective when he says that the achievements of modern science and technology are not just something to be tolerated, but good and desirable. However, he echoes the same concern made by Elder Paisios that science and technology become destructive forces if used solely to fulfill the desires of humanity. Among the diverse views presented in this volume, this is perhaps as good a summary as any, and emphasizes the desire as well as the struggle that the Orthodox Church has had over the many centuries in maintaining the middle path while avoiding the extremes.
