ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts of key concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book seeks in different ways to demonstrate the rationality and ethical integrity of their traditions. Nokuzola Mndende highlights the ethical dimensions of African traditional religion (ATR). Ethical values within ATR are people-centred. Evil originates with humans and not with God. ATR focuses on the oral transmission of norms and values acted out in practice. Dawoud El-Alami is highly critical of currents within the Islamic world which foster violent forms of jihad. Christopher Lewis stresses that there are two central areas which should be explored in attempting to evaluate modern religion. Adopting a different approach to Hinduism, Rita Sherma stresses that a sensible religion must be an open system, with permeable boundaries and a dialogical dynamic where currents of information and insight flow in and out much like an ecosystem.
