ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on some of the practical operations employed in the 'City of Cities Strategic Project', looking primarily at the meaning and form of the drawings and instruments used to communicate during the project in order to construct, refine and disseminate its contents. The many instruments produced for communication during the planning process did in fact play a central role both in the 'internal' development of strategic hypotheses within the working group and in the construction and management of the project itself through interaction. The city of cities idea was in fact created not just from observation of the geographical formation of the Milan area. They suggested the development of communications instruments such as films containing animated maps of movement in metropolis, produced again for the ViviMi exhibition. The image contradicts the principle behind the typical formation of an aerophotogrammetrical map: the cells obtained using buffering procedures on basis of the urban forms overlap, they thin out and concentrate.
