Exporting Railway Technologies

WithTin Kin Ho

Since the first commercial railway services more than 200 years ago, the working principles of running trains on rails and keeping them apart safely have largely remained but the technologies have evolved with time to cater for higher speed, increasing service intensity and rising passenger expectation. It has to be noted that a railway system is not just an engineering or technology artefact but a catalyst of change in the society it serves. While this chapter focuses primarily on technologies, social and economic factors, strategic management and business goals that take full advantage of technologies are also considered.
