ABSTRACT

This chapter presents some closing thoughts on the key concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book explains that transport capacity between major distant urban areas was the primary reason for the implementation of HSR. It confirms that HSR plays a relevant role in national inter-metropolitan passenger transportation. The book shows that HSR does not necessarily lead to dramatic changes in regional economics. However, it has also shown that cities with HSR stations at intermediate locations along HSR lines have been able to increase their economic activities. The book explores that with the time intervals, HSR allows abundant daily return travel, thus generating new mobility patterns and attracting activities. It focuses on the possibility of expanding HSR opportunities from cities with stations to wider areas around these cities and has discussed the needed reorganisation of public transportation to provide more service departing from new HSR stations.
