ABSTRACT

Literature that has addressed the analyses of the effects of the high-speed rail (HSR) range from studies that review the effects of the railway on other means of transportation to those focused on the reorganisation of railway transport. The transformation of space has been demonstrated in accordance with the new travelling times and with the spatial redistribution of regional growth including the new station. Each station location model has specific initial conditions as well as an ability to lean towards certain objectives. The conditions of accessibility prior to HSR cover two aspects: the status of the transport infrastructures and the management of the transportation service at the regional and urban scales. Spanish accessibility and intermodal policies at HSR stations have evolved to a large extent based on European experience and guidelines. Responsive-demand transport systems are effective for rural areas and for low-density urban peripheral areas.
