ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the concepts covered in the preceding chapters of this book. The book analyses experiences, attitudes and values of people in the Western Balkans at the start of the twenty-first century with a special focus on the effects of war. Broader comparisons including Serbia has been interesting for given the fact that among the West Balkan countries, Serbia has been an outlier in the sense of having had one of the most delayed transitions to democracy and the development of a full market economy. Due to its involvement in the wars and position on war criminals, the country is among the last to become integrated into the rest of Europe. The book focuses on war experiences and psychological well-being and health. It aims to establish whether absolute and relative socioeconomic inequalities in self-reported general health exist at all in the Western Balkans.
