ABSTRACT

I looked into the Gesù for a few minutes, but was again put off by the totalitarian atmosphere which had repelled me in St. Peter’s: I cannot see what a whole altar made of lapis lazuli has to do with a religion that enjoins the virtues of poverty and humility. But altogether I am out of sympathy with the Baroque: we know altogether too much these days about the ways of absolutism here on earth to look with complacency upon its encroachments on the life of the spirit.
