ABSTRACT

At a time of mounting concern over immigration and integration inside the European Union (EU), recent political issues surrounding new migration flows in various member states have compromised the stability of the EU border regime, raising questions about the future of Schengen and policies relating to the free movement of persons across the region's internal borders. In 2011, a series of repressive policy responses targeting incoming waves of migration highlighted the increased politicization of the EU immigration debate and revealed the difficulties that lie in the way of achieving a successful and comprehensive regional approach to integration.
