ABSTRACT

This chapter explores how Kieslowski’s series defines a moral and psychological attitude grounded in behaviors and attitudes which appear to long for, and allow unconscious motivations and greater connection with, the Self, thus, the embodiment of the New Ethic, as defined by Neumann, grounded in Jung’s ideas of psyche and its purposeful growth toward individuation. The New Ethic is more encompassing in the sense that it is orientated toward wholeness, i.e., no longer only individualistic by taking into account the ethical situation of the individual, but also considers the effect that the individual’s attitude will have upon the collective. Kieslowski’s expressive film images embody archetypal resonances from the deep unconscious, bypassing ego consciousness and knowledge, thus inviting the viewer into a deeper emotional place. It evokes a transcendent, mysterious, meaningful, numinous experience, that can take on a spiritual sense.
