ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the integration paths, experiences of home, and psychosocial wellbeing among ageing Azorean returnees. It presents a brief review of the literature on return, ageing and integration paths upon return. The chapter outlines an overview of the Azorean migration context and a methodological section. It explores the multiple narratives of home among Azorean returnees. Azorean migration to North America and Bermuda is linked to a desire to improve life from a material or financial point of view. Consistently with the findings of Gualda and Escriva, financial stability and material achievements proved to be very influential in the returnees' narratives of contentment and general life satisfaction in the Azores. The chapter focuses on three broad categories, namely: 'narratives of contentment', 'hybrid spaces of renegotiation and transitionality' and 'narratives of discontent'. The three categories of return narratives are, therefore, analysed according to four key dimensions: financial/material, health, psychosocial, and place attachment and sense of belonging.
