ABSTRACT

This chapter is concerned with the creative use of objects in the processes of complex televisual storytelling and world-building on the example of the first season (eight episodes) of True Detective (2014), an HBO crime drama TV series written by Nic Pizzolatto and directed by Cary Joji Fukunaga. True Detective (henceforth TD) assumes an anthology format, which means that each season of the series tells a complete story with its own set of characters. The season has garnered considerable critical acclaim (in contrast to the second season aired in 2015) 1 —most importantly, for its use of intertextuality and remediation (Demaria 2014), whereby it utilizes genres, narrative conventions, and visual techniques developed in other media forms (short and serial pulp fiction, novels, the cinema). 2
