ABSTRACT

Teacher Confession: “I used to eat lunch in the staff lounge, but not anymore. It’s way too toxic in there. I need to vent like any teacher does, but no one in my school’s lounge offers solutions to problems. I hear lots of ‘it’s because our student demographics are so bad,’ ‘these kids can’t learn,’ ‘technology spoils the kids’ brains so they can’t focus,’ and ‘if their parents can’t do their jobs at home, we can’t do our jobs at school.’ I’m not blind to the strains placed on my job by diverse needs, learning challenges, bad technology habits, poor attention spans, and bad parenting. And I get that my colleagues have plenty of reason to gripe. But I want to overcome the challenges, not just dwell on them.”
