ABSTRACT

This chapter sets the scene by outlining the key areas of policy and legislation that have driven the sustainability agenda in the management of non-residential and multi-residential property, with particular attention to UN and EU initiatives and their impact on countries such as the UK. This is followed by an examination of the main areas of sustainable facilities management, including modern practices in the integrated management of energy, water, waste, air quality, indoor environment, hygiene and ecology, including how these relate to soft FM and purchasing strategies.
