ABSTRACT
While other industries were collapsing, therefore, the entertainment industry was doing very well for
itself. But the Depression did not last for ever. In 1933, Franklin D. Roosevelt became President of the United States and put into effect the ‘New Deal’. This was a huge government programme that gave people jobs and helped to get the economy on its feet again. People gradually became more confident and once more felt able to look towards the future. The escapism of Tin Pan Alley songs and Hollywood film spectaculars was no longer quite so important. Younger people in particular wanted something that was more in tune with the times.
