ABSTRACT

White American popular music also spread abroad easily because it was different from the popular music of any other country. This book has described how Tin Pan Alley took over many types of AfroAmerican music and used them for its own ends. Ragtime, the blues, jazz and Swing all became Alley fashions. Furthermore, the singing of the ballad, the staple diet of Tin Pan Alley, was also influenced by the Afro-American tradition. This tradition has given much white American popular music an air of excitement and a hint of mystery which many people, including non-Americans, have found hard to resist.
