ABSTRACT

The case of "Eleanor" is an amalgam of several clients with similar presented issues within a community-based, insurance-sponsored weight management program. Eleanor reports a sporadic history of healthy eating and regular exercise. The focus of behavioral services is to help clients develop a sustainable approach to healthy living built around eating well and regular physical activity. Phone-based behavioral coaching is provided to participants approximately every six weeks during the course of the first year of their weight management program. The intake session protocol includes sections on adult exercise history, weight loss history, weekly social and work schedules, enablers and barriers, and behavioral goals. The clients in the weight management program often need to change less than 50 percent of their habits and often lack many of the key self-regulatory skills necessary to sustain change. The core of the program is delivered to the client at a local fitness facility by trained fitness and dietary professionals.
