ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines an ongoing, two-year working relationship with an elite amateur Irish golfer. It presents psychological consultations, interventions, end of season reviews, and approach to provision, as well as the theoretical framework from which readers draw in the application of psychological principles. Effective sport psychology consultation is about increasing awareness and empowering performers. The chapter examines reflection on the process and provision allows for a detailed lessons learned type of approach. The Test of Performance Strategies (TOPS) profile indicated that Carl had scored relatively poorly on concentration control and also on negative thinking and emotional control. Carl was given feedback regarding the self-rated scores that were lower than the elite average. The more systematic approach helped Carl to monitor his performances and see what aspects were good and what aspects needed improvement. Pragmatic approach combines a theory-led, evidence-based practice model which draws on practice-based evidence where appropriate.
