ABSTRACT

This chapter provides how peer mentoring was used in a psychological skills training program within a US competitive swimming setting. It illustrates the implementation of a peer mentoring program within a multi-year academic setting for SEPP graduate students. The Area Tallahassee Aquatic Club (ATAC) is a US competitive swimming program. A holistic approach was utilized in the development of sport psychology services for the three different competitive swimming groups at ATAC. As the team leader or mentor, the primary consultant has several responsibilities within the peer mentoring consulting team. The cognitive-behavioral approach offers the advantages of being based on both educational and coping skills. The structure of the consulting team allows for peer mentoring on a consistent basis during all phases of the delivery of sport psychology services. Self-awareness is another important aspect that will enhance the peer mentoring process. Overall, peer mentoring can help promote personal and professional development.
