ABSTRACT

The continued challenge to motivate adolescents to practice may also be evidenced in the suggestion that the current generation of young musicians lack the discipline and persistence to achieve musical mastery without the external pressure and constant monitoring of classroom or private instruction. This may be due to the distraction of social media and the possible lack of work ethic compounded by a learned expectation of instant gratification. Research has revealed that students prefer to find multiple reasons or motivations to participate in academic tasks; however, most of those motivations include social endorsements that distract and challenge self-regulation skills (Boekaerts & Corno, 2005).
