ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the strategies and approaches of effective teaching and learning for students who experience learning difficulties. This “special student group” is both diverse and variable, and the implementation of effective classroom teaching and learning strategies to meet the needs of these students has the potential both to prevent them from falling further behind and to reduce the impact of learning difficulties during their school years and over their lifespan. A considerable body of work from intervention research in education and psychology informs this discussion, especially with regard to effective teaching strategies and approaches suitable for these students (e.g. Baker et al., 2002; Geary, 2004; Kroesbergen & van Luit, 2003; Swanson & O’Connor, 2009; Swanson & Hoskyn, 1998; Torgesen, 2002; Vaughn et al., 2000, 2010; Wolf & Katzir-Cohen, 2001). However, this chapter’s focus will be primarily on regular classroom teaching practices that effective teachers employ in supporting students with learning difficulties to engage with grade-level curriculum.
