ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses ethics and laws in conducting research, writing about its results, submitting manuscripts for publication, and sharing those publications. It addresses the American Psychological Association (APA) and National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) codes of ethics, engaging in ethical research and publishing, and communicating with journal editors through submission letters. The chapter highlight issues related to authorship, techniques for preventing plagiarism, and posting documents on websites and commercial online repositories, such as Research Gate. Authorship credit is given only to individuals who have made a substantial professional contribution to the research, publication, or presentation. Many publishers allow articles to be shared freely to support teaching and training and grant and patent applications under some circumstances. Sherpa/Romeo distinguishes between pre-prints, post-prints, and publisher versions of manuscripts and journal articles. The chapter also highlights five areas of convergence across these ethics codes: institutional approval, duplicate and piecemeal publications, plagiarism, authorship credit, and data sharing.
