ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a case study about João, who was 14 years old at the time of the second interview and presented himself as an interested, but very shy and reserved adolescent. He was diagnosed as dyslexic at the beginning of second grade when he was 7 years old. When he received his official diagnosis of dyslexia, João was repeating first grade. It is common in Brazil for children who experience significant difficulties in learning to read to be retained in first grade. Due to his difficulties, João was referred for assessment at the Centre of Study of Education and Health and for an interdisciplinary evaluation at the Ambulatory of Child Neurology of the Clinical Hospital of the State University of São Paulo, Brazil. The neuroimaging exam revealed hypo perfusion in the left temporal lobe, indicating an under-activation of the auditory area of his brain that is commonly associated with poor auditory perception.
