ABSTRACT
In this chapter I explore how multilingual urban settings provide linguists with a diversity of opportunities for doing research on language and community. This chapter focuses on my work with the East Timorese community in Melbourne. It highlights how an unplanned initial phase of research may be a useful learning experience that can lead to productive interactions of benefit to both researchers and communities.
