ABSTRACT

The business continuity management (BCM) discipline is currently in something of a state of flux, with a growing number of managers and practitioners attempting to break new boundaries when implementing business continuity at the corporate level. This chapter begins with an outline of the management issues when pursuing business continuity in organizations. It reviews the current state of BCM development based on three types of BCM organizations. The chapter proposes three models of implementation according to the types of BCM organizations and explores their key attributes when incorporating at different levels of the corporate structure. It sets out a progressive approach to BCM implementation – using the three models to define the critical enablers (CEs). Finally, the chapter ends by suggesting three key factors that need to be adopted in order to realize the value BCM contributes to organizational success.
