ABSTRACT

Globalization, the free market model and democratic ideals are accepted in all corners of the world. Most notably, the 44 nation survey found strong democratic aspirations in most of the Muslim publics surveyed. The speed of the war in Iraq and the prevailing belief that the Iraqi people are better off as a result have modestly improved the image of America. Despite soaring anti-Americanism and substantial support for Osama bin Laden, there is considerable appetite in the Muslim world for democratic freedoms. The postwar update finds that in most Muslim populations, large majorities continue to believe that Western-style democracy can work in their countries. 'Global economy' is seen as more threatening than 'trade with other countries'. People worry about the impact of global trade on themselves and their families even though they believe that global trade is probably a good thing for their country as a whole.
