Introduction: Listening Out for Connections

In these words, Dorothy Smith, the Canadian feminist sociologist (1987: 8-9), expressed as well as anyone the point of a critical sociology: to look back at, to talk back to, structures of power that are deeply embedded in the contexts and forms of our daily life. But one term is missing, although perhaps implicit: to listen. Listening out for new forms of critical connection is the point of this book.
