ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the importance of providing a wealth of positive images of SEND through the everyday selection of picture books, dolls, small world play and the wider environment. An early years setting that is packed with the latest expensive equipment and picture books that reflect positive images is most influential if these are used by well-informed and confident staff who all understand their potential value in contributing to a better understanding of SEND. An effective inclusive early years curriculum relies on practitioners who use imagination and creativity alongside the provision of specific resources. Even very young children will respond to challenges in their play and this also encourages problem-solving and creative skills plus collaborative working. With the support of an adult or 'knowledgeable other' they will be encouraged to think about the benefits of an inclusive society by recognising and doing something about potential barriers in line with the social model approach.
