ABSTRACT

This chapter examines Auckland, and in particular the suburbs of Devonport and Morningside, as the environment in which the multi-award winning and chart-topping female New Zealand alt-pop singer Lorde's global music career flourished in 2013 and 2014, and her move away from it in 2015 and 2016. The other significant location in Lorde's musical career in Auckland is Morningside, an inner-city suburb. This place was popularized on television via the New Zealand animated comedy series Bro'Town, which ran from 2004 to 2010, and was devised by Elizabeth Mitchell and theater group The Naked Samoans. Lorde was reported to have split with her manager, Scott Maclachlan, and his company, Saiko Management, and taken over her own management. The borough of Devonport had an important influence on Lorde's development as a teenager and burgeoning singer/songwriter, along with her mother's influence on her reading.
