ABSTRACT

This chapter explores both manual and automatic approaches to data processing. It focuses on automatic data processing approaches and presents various associated challenges, advantages, and shortcomings. A data classification task in Artificial Intelligence for Disaster Response (AIDR) begins with the setting up of a data collection; that is, it collects crisis-related tweets using keywords or geographical boundaries. The chapter presents automatic event detection, information processing, and summarization approaches. It also presents an in-depth analysis of an application that uses both human and machine intelligence for the rapid analysis of social media data. Social media are an emerging technology that can be useful for disaster response efforts. Especially during the onset of a crisis situation, time-critical information needs emerge, and humanitarian organizations, depending on their roles, are interested in analyzing the information present on social media platforms so as to help affected populations as soon as possible.
