When Dunckerley o ered this charge along with its companion, ‘ e Light and Truth of Masonry Explained’, for sale in September 1757, he advertised them as having been delivered that April and June in the lodge meeting at the Pope’s Head tavern in Plymouth, of which he was the master.4 e slim, forty-page volume was dedicated to Philip Dormer Stanhope, fourth Earl of Chester eld (1694-1773). ough it is not known whether they were actually acquainted, Dunckerley later claimed to have corresponded with the earl, and in 1794 pub-

lished a number of letters in the Freemasons’ Magazine which he said were copies of letters he sent to Chester eld during the 1740s.5
