Contrary to all the other texts edited in this volume, this extract does not belong to masonic literature but consists of seven articles – ve of which directly concerning the masonic lodges – of the 1799 Unlawful Societies Act. e general signi cance of the Act and the way it a ected Freemasonry can only be understood in the light of the revolutionary context of the 1790s.
