ABSTRACT

This chapter summarises the findings of a pilot programme evaluation for a whole school approach to Philosophy for Children (P4C) in Liverpool schools. In 2012, Liverpool Primary Care Trust (PCT) had identified a need for supporting well-being and mental health in schools to complement the mental health provision being commissioned. As a partnership between organisations, such as Sustainability, Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) and School Improvement Liverpool, a pilot programme introducing P4C as a whole schools approach was established to enable schools to become a catalyst for pupils, teachers and school communities to develop skills for improving well-being and increasing community resilience. The evaluation's brief was to monitor and report on the awareness, perceptions and expectations of outcomes to P4C, prior to teacher training and immediately post-training, ahead of application. Then, at the mid-point and end stages of the academic year the outcomes of the application on pupils, teachers and schools would be measured and evaluated.
