ABSTRACT

This chapter illustrates a few examples of Paulo Freire's teachings with concrete examples of teacher education students participating in critical complex education. It also discusses Freire's personal history and then introduces a brief definition of the major concepts of his work. Later, this rich personal and sociopolitical history, and the brief definitions of the concepts are connected to work with young children in the dynamic world of early childhood through a few brief stories and vignettes of young children and their student teachers, many of whom are just beginning their work with children. The best known of Freire's writings is Pedagogy of the Oppressed, and with the publication of The Politics of Education, his intellectual, philosophical, and pedagogical ideas became more accessible to more readers. Originally in the United States, Freire's ideas were most often used in programs of adult literacy and adult language education.
