ABSTRACT

In Asia, the shame of addictions and the cultural weight to keep personal issues inside the nuclear family make solution focused brief therapy (SFBT) an ideal intervention for recovery. SFBT validates and supports clients’ values and allows the client to articulate the best outcome of therapy in their own cultural frame of reference. Importantly, SFBT invites clients to imagine a future free of their addiction. This chapter discusses how SFBT uniquely empowers addicts in Asia with a new hope, that they can free themselves from the bondage of their secrets and shame that are so powerfully forged by cultural norms.
