ABSTRACT

Dealing with students’ problematic behaviour in school can be tricky, especially with multiple stakeholders involved, such as the parents and the school leaders. The author, a solution focused practitioner (SFP), is one of the owners of a private school in Indonesia, and uses the solution focused approach in the day-to-day running of the school. She shares two examples in which she facilitated a solution focused process to address bullying. Both examples highlight how a solution focused approach facilitated collaboration and ownership in resolving the issues among the key people involved, thus allaying the fears of concerned parents and ensuring that no parties ever lost ‘face’, both important factors in the Asian context. The process also demonstrates the importance of including the students involved in the incidents, to become part of the solution instead of part of the problem.
