ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book addresses major issues in understanding the ways in which technologies impact upon learners. It examines various levels of analysis, encompassing culture, learner identity and development, and specific curricula. By drawing on researchers from different areas, the book seeks to offer insights about the nature of opportunities and risks that exist, and how these might be managed for the benefit of future learners. The book is divided into three themed parts: Early engagement with new technologies: Decisions, dangers and data; New technology: Supporting all learners or divisive tools; and Global and cultural reflections on educational technology. It is concerned with issues that have importance in relation to the development of learners, in an area where accessible research data is often lacking, and in creating frameworks that can support evidence–informed decisions.
