ABSTRACT

The First World War was a major watershed in European and U.S. American history. Latin America, however, is usually not mentioned in the discussions about that world conflict. Nevertheless, the serious crises that shook the world in the years before several American countries entered the Great War in 1917 were also felt in Latin America. Looking at the event from a Latin American perspective, we are able to understand that for that continent, the outburst of global violence started earlier. The major outbreak of violence played out in the region in the form of the Mexican Revolution. It coincided with the wars in Europe and elsewhere in the 1910s. In fact, Latin America could not keep out of the spiral of violence that expanded to a new global dimension between 1914 and 1918.
